Google Update May 2026
27 May, 2026Google’s unleashed the February 2026 Core Update and the internet’s become slightly more chaotic with the searches. Basically, the party’s continued but Google’s rechecked the list and removed a few guests while letting new ones in – those that have the right mix of experience, authority, trust and quality content.
What’s the Big Deal with This Update?
There’s been a huge shake-up with Google’s latest Core Update – Google has rechecked the internet for quality, and it’s impacted lots of websites. Some will see huge boosts in traffic, whilst others will see huge drops. Rather than being a penalty, the Feb 2026 update is more of a “raising of the bar”, with Google now focusing much more on the quality of the content, user experience and trust signals on the internet.
Why Did My Rankings Take a Hit?
So, why the drop? Let’s break it down:
- Thin Content: If the content on your website has the same amount of value as a piece of chocolate teapots then Google’s update will see it drop down the rankings in search results.
- Weak E-E-A-T Signals: The web is full of faceless ‘ghost sites’. All of these sites cause us to lose confidence in a site when we can’t identify the genuine humans standing behind the site, often in the authors’ page or bio section.
- Over-Optimized SEO: Most websites get a ranking hit from over-Optimized SEO tactics. For example, Stuffing far too many keywords into a webpage and using very very similar anchor text for Backlinks. Try to make the wording more natural and you should be fine in the rankings.
- Low User Experience: If a website is slow or has a poor user experience on mobile then it’s equivalent to playing elevator music at a rave. It’s not going to get a crowd of people dancing and certainly won’t get any recommendations.
- AI-Generated Content Without Value: As for AI-Generated Content without any real value for users, the February 2026 update will simply dismiss such content and reduce ranking for sites that publish it.
Who Won and Who Lost?
- Industries Taking a Hit: Health, Finance, Real Estate, Tech Reviews, Affiliate Sites – basically any industry classed under ‘Your Money or Your Life’.
- The Winners Are… – Local businesses ranking highly, boasting healthy review numbers – Brands and individuals with strong expertise – Companies boasting case studies, of ultimate use to future consumers
What’s Up with E-E-A-T?
As Google is placing a heavy emphasis on ranking sites based on their E-E-A-T signals, many webmasters are wondering how they can implement the E-E-A-T criteria to their sites in order to gain ranking power. In a nutshell, the E-E-A-T criteria or “recipe” for high ranking sites is a smoothie consisting of four key ingredients: Expertise, Authority, (and) Trustworthiness.
SEO Changes You Need to Know
- Quality Over Quantity: In the past, having large amounts of content would cause ranking gains. Google is now looking for Quality over Quantity. One Epic piece of content can perform better in rankings than 10 average pieces of content.
- Topical Authority: Instead of having a huge amount of surface-level content, create content clusters that dive deep into a specific topic and provide in-depth coverage of it.
- User Intent: Google is now attempting to read the minds of web users searching for information on the Internet. They are attempting to create algorithms that identify what a user is actually looking for on the Internet. In order to achieve better search engine rankings for your website, your content needs to identify and answer the questions and needs of your targeted search audience and keep them hooked while you’re doing it.
- Brand Authority: Google will pay particular attention to Brand Authority signals including brand mentions, customer reviews, backlinks to your brand website. Having your brand mentioned in the press also comes into this.
- Real Business Proof: Show customers how other businesses have used your content for their own success. Use case studies, testimonials, and photos and screenshots of real customers using your service.
Recovery Plan: Let’s Fix This
** Do NOT Panic!**: We have no reason to believe that Google is causing harm right now, so let’s give them a couple of weeks to sort out the new updates, and then start the assessment and healing process.
Audit Your Content: Put all your content through a quality filter, such as you would use for spring cleaning. In the audit process review each piece of content and question whether it is of sufficient value to users, whether it is better than the information already available online, and whether it needs updating to remain relevant.
- Boost E-E-A-T: Add the bios, the credentials of the writers and more to turn your site into a trust factory.
- Update Content: Breathe some new life into your top performing pages (whether they have been published recently or a while ago). We would recommend including more depth, data or case studies where possible to really make them stand out from similar content elsewhere online.
- Optimize for Answers: As Google shifts to an answer based model, many of the classic tactics can be modified to help you rank for answer based queries. Optimize your top pages to answer the user’s query most effectively. Use clear heading tags, organize your content into answers to FAQs, and most importantly make sure that your content is as simple as possible while still being answers to complex questions.
- Tech Check: Make sure your site loads fast enough, is optimized for mobile devices and does not contain any broken links. The technology on the back of your site is as important as how your site looks on the front. You have to “tune” your car before you can take it for a spin.
- Internal Linking: This strategy will help to build up Topic Clusters to connect similar articles that Google will use to see your authority on a specific subject.
- Geo-Targeting: So if you’re based in the UAE, make sure you’re optimizing for locals and throwing in some geo-targeting in there. Use a local pin to mark your location on the internet, and rank higher in searches within the UAE than elsewhere.
- Remove Spam: The worse the spam the bigger the improvement. We get rid of all keyword stuffing and questionable links on your site.
- Build Brand Signals: Once you start to get more traffic, convert more visitors, and receive more mentions, online reviews, etc. within your niche, you establish what Google calls Brand Signals, aka social proof which indicates to the search engine that your brand is also trustworthy for providing high quality relevant content.
How Long Till Recovery?
How long is SEO Recovery from Google Algorithm Updates? This could be as quick as a few weeks and could also extend to the next update, i.e. the next Google Algorithm Update. As long as you’re actively improving your site, then recovery from a Google Penalty or from a Google Algorithm Update is going to occur much quicker than if you were to just sit around and wait for it to happen.
What Not to Do
- Don’t Delete Content or Assets from your site: Yes this means don’t cut your hair after a bad day!
- No Spammy Backlinks: If you linking with spammy backlinks such as link farms then don’t even try to recover your SEO. Such links are similar to fake IDs and can lead to serious penalization of your website.
- Don’t Blame Tech: Just because you found a couple of errors with your website, does not mean all of your problems were caused by your SEO tools and website technology. Also look at your content and start there for your troubleshooting.
Signs You’re Recovering
- Rankings inching up
- More impressions
- Better keyword visibility
This too shall pass… Rankings and impression numbers slowly rising like the sun after a long, after a rainy SEO-icy winter… (The above image is just an analogy, and NOT related to ANY seasonal update!).
Future-Proof Your SEO
- Write for Humans: Write simple, clear and helpful copy.
- Show Real Experience: Show people your expertise by including case studies and providing them with them. Share your insights and that will prove your knowledge of a subject.
- Topic Authority: Build your authority on a topic by going deep into it rather than covering a wide variety of topics.
- Keep Content Current and Updated: Just like you would keep your smart phone updated, make sure to update your content too from time to time.
- Monitor Search Intent: Know what users want and give it to ‘em.
Wrap-Up
The update focuses on trust and quality content. This means creating content which is of the highest quality. Providing real expertise, fresh content and superior user experience can lead to developing a reputation online and thus making it easier for users to find you in search. We all know SEO is a marathon and not a sprint. Take some time to assess and amend your approach to ranking on search engines.
