Optimizing for AI: Why AEO is Becoming Essential for Digital Marketers
27 May, 2025Google’s March 2025 Core Update is now rolling out – check the Google Search Status Dashboard for the start time of 9:23 AM PDT March 13, 2025, plus a two weeks deployment period across all Google Search.
Google has started to roll out the March 2025 Core Update for Google Search. Here is a look at the Google Search Status Dashboard as of the update’s release. Google’s algorithm update is said to take up to two weeks to reach 100% of Google’s search systems.
As with previous Core Updates, the March 2025 update will see most sites experience some fluctuation in their rankings and in the amount of organic traffic that they receive. In order for Google to assess all of the sites on the web, Google’s algorithms have to re-score sites that have been crawled and re-indexed as part of the broader update.
What Is the March 2025 Core Update?
The updates refer to a broad change to Google’s main search ranking algorithm. While the previous updates focused on individual ranking signals (e.g. backlinks), core updates improve Google’s general method of evaluating all the signals (e.g. quality, engagement, usability, etc.) to rank the best pages for all queries and in all languages.
These updates are general updates to the main search ranking algorithms. They are not spam updates. They are not updates which target specific signals. The updates serve the purpose of improving how Google ranks content overall. So every website will see some change as Google’s algorithms reevaluate the pages on the web to rank most relevant for a given search.
Remember, because the update impacts content of all ages and types, you could find that a site that was ranking well in search now drops, or a site that hasn’t been updated recently could start to rank higher for searches related to that site.
Google announced the March 2025 Core Update
“Released the March 2025 core update. The rollout may take up to 2 weeks to complete.”
Google has not detailed the changes to the ranking signals or how the March 2025 Core Update works.
As mentioned in the official update from Google, helpful content is key. The search engine is continually refining how it ranks pages, and as such, we strongly recommend that website owners and SEO professionals around the world focus on creating the best content possible for their users and customers.
The algorithm processes the billions of pages of content on the web, which will result in some ranking fluctuations as the update is rolled out over the couple of weeks. Therefore rankings may go up and down during the update roll out.
Potential changes include:
- Fluctuations in keyword rankings
- Increases or decreases in organic traffic
- Changes in impressions and click-through rates
- Movement in search visibility across multiple pages
For an update that’s going to be released over a time frame (as this core update is being rolled out over the next couple of weeks or so), ranking for individual pages will likely fluctuate several times during that time as Google continues to refine ranking for every page on the internet, before settling to ranking positions where they ‘land’ following completion of the core update’s rollout.
Wait a few days and do not make any SEO changes because the changes in the rankings can reverse in the following days.
How to Monitor the Update
During the rollout phase as the update is slowly being released to the web, monitoring of the changes on your web pages is advised and for now SEO changes should be avoided as their effects could even reverse after some days.
Use Google Analytics to monitor:
- Overall organic sessions
- Landing page performance
- Conversion trends
- Traffic by content category
It is normal for daily numbers to fluctuate so try to see trends as opposed to individual changes.
Google Search Console (GSC)
Monitor:
- Total impressions
- Clicks
- Average ranking position
- Query performance
- Top-performing pages

Compare Rankings Over Time
Compare your ranking positions before the update kicks in, during the time the update is rolling out to your site, and after the update has finished rolling out to your site. Once the update has finished rolling out to your site you will have a better understanding of the long-term impact of the update.
Once the update has finished rolling out you will be able to clearly see the long lasting changes that the update has had.
How to Prepare for Core Algorithm Updates
I go over the same advice each time that Google provides for how to get ready for a core update and then what to do after the update actually rolls out.
If your rankings do go up or down for your website during a core update, try to focus on making your content better rather than trying to solve for a particular technical issue that you might suspect is the cause.
Best practices include:
- Creating original, valuable content
- Demonstrating expertise and authority
- Ensuring information is accurate and up to date
- Improving user experience and site usability
- Writing content that satisfies user intent
Websites consistently putting out great content are going to perform best in future algorithm updates from Google.
Avoid Making Reactive Changes
One of the biggest mistakes of website owners during a core update is doing a large number of SEO changes while the update is still rolling out.
Most mistakes which website owners make with their SEO during a core update, are the changes of SEO measures that website owners do proactive before the end of the rollout of a core update. As the strong ranking-fluctuations during a core update are not always caused by the update itself, changes which website owners do based on the rankings during the update, could be unnecessary or even have a negative impact.
Instead:
- Continue monitoring your data.
- Wait for rankings to stabilize.
- Review long-term performance before making optimization decisions.
Measuring how your site has been rated by Google after the update is by far the most accurate way to determine your sites ranking within the Google search results.
It’s anticipated the March 2025 Core Update will take approximately two weeks to complete and then the site can review the before and after data to establish any changes to search rankings as a result of the update.
After the update has completed and the ranking drops have leveled off, one can compare ranking positions before the update to ranking positions after the update. Depending on how the ranking positions have changed during the rollout, there may be even bigger differences after the update has been completed.
Search is a rapidly changing area and Google will continue to update its systems for the remainder of the year with a number of releases aiming to improve search quality and better return most relevant results for users.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, the March 2025 Core Algorithm Update is yet another update to the search engine’s ranking systems and, as with the previous updates, it is all about improving search in order to better serve users. These updates will naturally cause fluctuations in rankings in the short term but will lead to increased visibility for websites with high quality content in the long term.
Create value-driven content. If you focus on the long-term, writing content of high value for users, always remaining up-to-date with the latest algorithm changes, you will see your search engine ranking increase in the long run. This is because the Google search ranking algorithm is designed to evaluate sites with reference to these key factors, and so the best thing to do is to focus on these when attempting to improve your search engine ranking.
This post will be used in conjunction with the articles that outline the upcoming Google algorithm updates due to release for the remainder of the year including the June 2025 Core Update, the August 2025 Spam Update, and the December 2025 Core Update in order to write a comprehensive SEO article detailing the major search algorithm updates for the year 2025.
