Key features every web design company should offer
21 June, 2026The Google Spam Update has now completed rollout across all languages and regions around the world. The update started to rollout on the 24th of June and took around 2 days for complete.
This update was a Global update, meaning that it was released in all languages and in all locations around the world. Google was utilizing the improved methods to detect search engine spam while evaluating every website on the web.
The June 2026 Spam Update from Google is a release of improvements to spam detection at Google and should not cause a large change in how rankings work for most web sites. The update is intended to improve the quality of search results for all users by reducing the amount of spam in search results.
What Is the June 2026 Google Spam Update?
Google has today confirmed the update via their Google Search Status Dashboard. The update is described as a ranking update and started at 9:00 a.m. PT, on the 24th of June, 2016. Just a few hours later the release notes were published which read:
“Released the June 2026 spam update. This update is global and affects all languages. As with most spam updates, the rollout for this update should take a few days to complete.”
Google completed the update a few days later and it has officially ended on 26th June 2026.
This update is focused on improving Google’s search results. As before the update was rolled out, Google is improving its automated systems for detecting and preventing search engine spam and thus this update is just another step in the right direction for Google’s AI-powered spam detection technology, called SpamBrain.
How Spam Updates Differ From Core Algorithm Updates
It is also important to note that this spam update is not the same as a core update to the Google algorithms.
In addition to releasing Spam Updates, Google has traditionally released a Core Algorithm Update every year or so in order to improve ranking in Google Search. Since its algorithm is constantly being updated and improved, Google also releases a variety of other updates throughout the year, meant to refine or improve the Search experience in general.
Spam Updates
A spam update is different from a core algorithm update. Core updates are meant to fundamentally change how a website is ranked based on a wide array of signals for example, many core updates have looked to support a wide array of quality signals. This update and past others of the same nature are focused on improved systems to detect and reduce spam in search results.
Spam updates, including this latest release, are powered by Google’s AI-powered spam detection technology known as SpamBrain. All updates released by Google, including Core Updates, are powered by SpamBrain which allows the Google algorithms to better detect low quality, automated and manipulative content on web pages.
- Low-quality automated content
- Manipulative link-building practices
- Websites created primarily for ranking purposes
- Scaled content abuse
- Other violations of Google’s spam policies
A spam update aims to decrease the visibility of the websites that try to manipulate their ranking, in contrast to properly set up SEO. Therefore, these updates do not penalize sites that use proper SEO methods, whereas they lower the ranking of sites that attempt to manipulate their position.
Core Updates
Core Updates are different from spam updates and are more general updates to the Google ranking algorithms.
They evaluate many different factors, including:
- Content quality
- Website authority
- User experience
- Search intent
- Expertise and trustworthiness
- Overall value provided to users
Why do ranking drops from a Core Update differ from those from a Spam Update?
The reasons for a ranking drop from a Core Update and a Spam Update are generally different. Therefore, it is possible that a website experiences a ranking drop in rankings due to a Core Update and a Spam Update, but for different reasons.
How This Update Compares With Previous Google Spam Updates
The June 2026 Spam Update is the second Google Spam Update announced for the year 2026.
For comparison:
In contrast to the March 2026 Spam Update which was completed in less than one day and thus became the fastest spam update Google released to the public, the August 2025 Spam Update took roughly four weeks to complete.
The August 2025 Spam Update took around four weeks to complete. It led to ranking changes for search queries that went through a longer rollout period for the spam update than what search queries went through for the March 2026 Spam Update that completed in less than one day.
The update took somewhere in the middle of these two updates to complete.
While Google did not announce any new policy to fight spam in this update, Google’s communication around the update characterizes it as an improvement to Google’s spam system. Therefore, at this point in time, Google has not published documentation that outlines the specific spam tactics that this update targets.
Why the June 2026 Spam Update Matters for Businesses
While this update is not a core algorithm update, it is also important to monitor for any changes in ranking or site traffic around the time of this update.
If your website experienced:
- A sudden drop in organic traffic
- Changes in keyword rankings
- Pages losing visibility
- Unexpected improvements in rankings
The June 2026 Spam Update is likely to blame for any decline in organic traffic, lowering of your keyword rankings or your pages dropping in the search results.
Note that typical ranking changes are not caused by updates to the spam filtering systems. Other causes for ranking changes around the time of an update include:
- Competitor improvements
- New content being published in your industry
- Changes in search behavior
- Website technical issues
- Content quality signals
It is better to first check your data to determine whether or not an algorithm update is the reason for the changes observed on your website.
What Should Businesses Do After the Update?
Google recommends that websites impacted by the spam update review their published pages against Google’s Search Essentials and spam policies.
In the meantime focus on developing your business’s long term SEO strategies and write them with the intention of complying with Google’s goals for delivering most relevant highest quality information to users.
Key areas to review include:
- Create Original, Helpful Content
Continue to focus on long term SEO and making sure your site complies with Search Essentials & spam policies and provide the most valuable information to users.
Websites should avoid:
- Generic articles with little unique value
- AI-generated content without human expertise
- Pages created only to target keywords
- Repetitive content across multiple pages
Instead, focus on:
- Answering real customer questions
- Providing expert insights
- Adding original examples and experiences
- Creating detailed service pages
- Improve Website Expertise and Trust
Search engines are increasingly judging the Search Engine Optimization of a website based on the website’s ability to display expertise and trustworthiness to users and search engines alike.
Businesses should strengthen:
- Author information
- Company information
- Service explanations
- Customer reviews
- Case studies
- Industry experience
These are ways that your website can show your expertise and establish your credibility with your visitors and with the search engines.
- Review Link Quality
The lastest spam updates at Google are extremely hurtful to websites that get a large portion of their backlinks from unnatural sources.
Businesses should evaluate:
- The quality of incoming links
- Potential spam links
- Paid or manipulative link practices
- Low-quality directory submissions
Quality natural links from relevant authoritative sites are gained from creating great content and building good relationships online.
Recovery Expectations After a Spam Update
Google warns that after a spam update there is no instant recovery to top rankings for affected websites.
Even after you have made changes to a website affected by a spam update, Google’s systems need time to recrawl and reevaluate the changes made to the website before they start to have an effect in the search results.
This means:
- Quick ranking recovery should not always be expected.
- Continuous improvements are important.
- Additional algorithm evaluations are likely to be included in future updates.
SEO is a long term campaign to improve a website’s ranking using the best practices and methods. This means that after a number of updates a website that has been optimized will return to ranking well and even climb the ranks over time.
